Earthworks is seeking a full time Field Organizer for Ohio and Pennsylvania to help address the health and climate impacts of natural gas development. This position is part of our Community Empowerment Project (CEP), which documents pollution and engages residents in taking action to reduce it.

CEP advances strong federal and state regulations and policies and their enforcement to limit emissions of methane and health-harming pollutants created by the oil and gas industry. Progress in Ohio and Pennsylvania is critical to stemming harm from the rapid expansion of gas processing facilities using Utica and Marcellus Shale gas. The Ohio and Pennsylvania field organizer will help expand CEP and engage in the larger context of oil and gas industry accountability within the states.

LOCATION: Location within the region is flexible. The Field Organizer will work from a home office and travel frequently throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

Engage and support communities living with the impacts of nearby gas development. Work with the CEP Coordinator and Earthworks’ trained Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) camera operators to identify and document pollution from gas wells and facilities. Research permits for selected wells and facilities to identify operational requirements and problems.

Using OGI videos and other information, help file and track complaints with state agencies and push for responsive action to reduce emissions. Work with the CEP Manager and partner organizations to identify regulatory and policy opportunities on the state level to reduce oil and gas pollution and impacts on communities and the environment.

Earthworks is a small, collaborative organization, and therefore all staff may be required as needed to provide assistance on organization-wide projects outside of their area of focus. This position requires participation in program and organizational activities, including regularly scheduled meetings with colleagues, conference calls and meetings with partner organizations, and Earthworks’ in-person program and strategic planning meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS: Strong interest in climate change and health issues. Experience in community organizing and engagement. Desire to understand and advocate for environmental policies and regulations. Ability to collaborate with people with a range of backgrounds and views and to participate in coalitions.

Excellent research, writing, and oral communication skills are required. Technical understanding of the social and environmental impacts of energy development is a plus. Flexibility and willingness to travel are necessary. Must be a self-starter and enjoy working both independently and under direction as part of a project team.

To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, and short writing sample by September 5th to:

Earthworks is an equal opportunity employer. We offer a mission and employee-focused work environment and competitive compensation including a generous benefits package. Diversity is highly valued. The Field Organizer reports to the CEP Manager and collaborates with colleagues nationwide.
