Statement from the OEC Regarding the Congressional Redistricting Reform Working Group

David Miller, October 26, 2017

The following statement can be attributed in full, or in part, to Sarah Spence, Director of Government Affairs at the Ohio Environmental Council:

“Today, I will provide testimony to the Ohio General Assembly’s Congressional Redistricting Reform Working Group in support of ensuring that Ohio’s congressional districts are reformed fairly. With wide support for environmental protections, the congressional agenda should be set by elected officials fairly chosen by the people.

“We’re well past due for fair congressional districts. With zero Ohio congressional seats changing political parties since 2012, and the closest 2016 congressional election being determined by 18.4 percent of the vote, it’s clear that the system we have in place isn’t working for all Ohioans. Our congressional representatives should be beholden to voters, not party affiliation.

“The time is now to ensure that we have a fair and sustainable future for all Ohioans.”
