Lake Erie Shoreline Case Ends – Almost

After nearly seven years of legal debate between lakeside property owners and the State of Ohio, the OEC, and others, the Ohio Supreme Court finally rendered a decision last fall.

The Court reversed a lower appeal court’s decision and reiterated the Supreme Court’s 1878 finding that private landowners have no ownership beyond the “natural shoreline.” However, the Court did not define where that “natural shoreline” begins.

So while the OEC’s vigilance with this case has protected the public’s right to access the shoreline, there is more work to do. Stay tuned.
