Ohio Environmental Council, February 12, 2012
Testify as Interested Party to Ohio Senate Bill 289.
The OEC Supports Cogeneration
The OEC is very supportive of clean energy technologies and of policies that encourage investments in clean energy in Ohio. We have become familiarized with the AK Steel ‐ Air Products cogeneration project over the past year and agree with the project developers and the sponsors of Senate Bill 289 that this project, if developed, will be a shining example of waste energy recovery deployment in Ohio.
With over 100 megawatts of electricity generated from waste gas that currently is being vented to the atmosphere, this project will reduce air emissions, improve the facility’s efficiency, and tap into an under‐utilized resource‐‐a resource that is abundant in Ohio’s manufacturing and industrial sectors.
In fact, the latest U.S. Department of Energy estimates that Ohio’s manufacturing and industrial sectors could generate upwards of 9,800 megawatts of power from cogeneration.
