The Ohio Environmental Council seeks a Finance Manager to manage the daily financial operations of the OEC family of organizations including OEC, OEC Action Fund, OEC Action Fund PAC, and Conservation Ohio. Good financial planning, accounting, and reporting is fundamental to the organization’s success in fulfilling its mission. 

The ideal candidate will be technically skilled, able to work within larger concepts while paying meticulous attention to detail, able to translate financial concepts to non-finance staff, and eager to work with a growing family of organizations.

This position is based in Columbus and reports to the Deputy Director. 


Job Responsibilities

The Finance Manager should be supportive of the OEC mission and will be responsible for the following: 

  • Lead budget development, tracking, and reporting for the organization, individual programs, and grants
  • Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, and other bookkeeping functions
  • Manage payroll and other human resource benefits administration
  • Perform financial functions for grant applications, tracking, and reporting
  • Develop all financial documents including planning, tracking, and reporting
  • Conduct month, quarter, and fiscal year end closing procedures
  • Lead annual audit process
  • Serve as co-liaison for Board of Directors’ Finance Committees
  • Develop and implement financial and internal control policies and procedures
  • Manage banking and investments



  • At least 5 years in the accounting field performing job responsibilities as described above. 3 years within a nonprofit organization of at least $1M that manages grants is preferred.
  • Expertise in Quickbooks or similar accounting software
  • Accounting or finance degree
  • Experience developing and managing budgets


Performance Expectations 

The Finance Manager’s work is critical to the smooth operation of the entire organization. They must: 

  • Be a skilled communicator, able to translate complex concepts to non-technical staff.
  • Have excellent accounting technical knowledge. The Finance Manager is the OEC’s primary financial staff upon which the entire family of organizations rely. They must be able to skillfully work with external auditors and accountants, board members, executive staff, and non-finance staff.
  • Be an expert task manager. They must synthesize information coming from all directions, distill what is important, plan and meet deadlines, coordinate actions by others, and ensure excellent customer service. This requires great attention to detail, ability to track projects and tasks, coordinate smoothly with others, and to work proactively.
  • Balance the big picture needs of the organization with the detailed requirements of the job. The Finance Manager should consistently strive to improve operations for the organization, reduce costs, increase productivity, and support a professional staff. 
  • Demonstrate initiative and work as a team player. They should approach new ideas with a sense of possibility. They should also have excellent customer service skills to support staff, board, and other important stakeholders.
  • Able to work occasional nights and weekends. Minimal travel required.



Salary for this position is $53,000 – $75,000 and depends on experience. Excellent benefits include employer-paid health, vision, dental, and life insurance; flexible and dependent care spending account; generous paid time off; and employer-matched retirement fund.
