JOB DESCRIPTION: MANAGING POLITICAL DIRECTOR

The Ohio Environmental Council seeks a seasoned Political Director to lead the political direction of the OEC family of organizations. This includes directing government relations, campaigns, communications, and expanding nonpartisan voter participation in the democratic process. This position will also direct and oversee the activities of the OEC’s affiliated 501(C)(4) organization, The OEC Action Fund. The position is based in Columbus, Ohio.

The ideal candidate will be both visionary and a strategic tactician who can manage and work with a diverse staff, partners, board of directors, and leaders to support and grow the organization and advance the policy agenda.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Political Director and is responsible for the following:

  • Political power-building and strategy development, leadership, and coordination of nonpartisan advocacy, communications, and campaigns. Work with policy staff to develop and successfully implement issue-based campaigns.
  • Manage a department and teams of campaigns and communications staff to fulfill their programmatic, professional, and organizational potential.
  • Lead communications staff to build a consistent and powerful narrative for the OEC’s work and ensure the OEC “voice” is consistent and utilized effectively.
  • Serve as a lead representative for the organization including partners and the public.
  • Fulfill organizational responsibilities including: attending board meetings as requested; participating in the organization’s senior management team; managing budgets; carrying a portfolio of major donors and/or grantors and participating in other fundraising efforts; and managing foundation relationships and ensuring grant deliverables are met.

Performance Expectations 

As a member of the senior management team, this position helps set the direction and ensure the health of our family of organizations. The individual is expected to be a skilled political tactician and play a leadership role in the organizational development and with partner and allied organizations.

The Political Director must: 

Effectively develop and work towards aggressive goals. Translate broad goals into achievable steps. Help set and manage appropriate expectations. Handle detailed, complex concepts and problems and make rapid decisions regarding management and political issues. Plan and implement programs. Establish strong relationships with the staff, board, donors, and other important members of the community. Develop smooth and constructive relationships with people from all areas of the state.

Plan and meet deadlines. Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet the demands of executive management. Demonstrate initiative and work as a team player. Approach new ideas with a sense of possibility. 

Adhere to the highest ethical standards in management, governance, and fund development. Convey a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the organization and our partners in the advocacy and environmental sector. Demonstrate commitment to continued professional growth and development.

 

Qualifications

  • Experience executing modern campaign practices and working well with diverse coalitions;
  • Some fundraising experience a plus;
  • Demonstrated management experience;
  • Experience developing strong partnerships with boards of directors, grasstops stakeholders, and partners; and
  • A belief that our mission matters and that the protection of Ohio’s air, land, and water should be a priority among decision-makers.

Compensation 

The salary range for the position is $60,000 – $75,000 for someone with 7 years of work experience minimum. Salary negotiable based on background and internal band system.
