Executive Director (Part-Time)

The Midwest Biodiversity Institute is a 501(c)(3) scientific environmental research and education organization. MBI is dedicated to the development and application of scientific methods and techniques to evaluate, protect and restore the environment. We place special emphasis on the development of high-quality comprehensive monitoring and assessment programs, and provide direct technical support and policy advice to all levels of government, non-governmental organizations, and private groups. MBI also provides technical training in aquatic resource monitoring and assessment, as well as community and citizen science programs.

We are seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization in extending our mission and enhancing our programs.

This is an ideal role for the leader who is seeking to make a positive impact on the environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee MBI’s programs and operations, collaborating with managers and staff.
  • Be a strong financial steward of the organization’s resources and operations. Enhance policies and practices for effective operations.
  • Reports on the organization’s activities and program results to the board of directors. Engage the board for strategic direction.
  • With staff, conduct monthly and quarterly operation reviews, and periodic forecast updates for all programs.
  • Provide leadership advice to research and field staff managers to ensure support of all areas of work.
  • Retains a diverse, highly qualified staff by providing career coaching, growth, professional and personal development for employees.
  • Maintains viable funding to ensure programs meet or exceed strategic goals and objectives.
  • Consults/advises leaders and elected officials to provide policy guidance and advice related to current conservation and environmental issues.
  • Reviews and provides comment/contributes changes and opinions on regulatory proposals initiated by Ohio EPA and other agencies related to environmental policy and practices.

Key Qualifications | Skills:

  • 10 or more years of management experience in an operational environment.
  • Environmental or biological background, or familiarity with water quality/ecological regulations strong preferred.
  • Experience with negotiating, grant writing, and fundraising.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups, and/or government agencies.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills and supervisory experience at an executive or management level.
