Media Advisory: Webinar on Monday – OEC proposes SAFER GAS Act

Ohio Environmental Council, September 6, 2013

Ohio needs stronger environmental safeguards, enforcement, and property owner protections to guard against the coming, inevitable impacts of eastern Ohio’s shale gas rush.

That’s the contention of the Ohio Environmental Council, which will unveil its proposed SAFER GAS Act at an 11 a.m. tele-webinar on Monday, September 9, a day before the 1-year anniversary of the enactment of Governor Kasich’s energy plan (Senate Bill 315).

The OEC proposal keys on four areas:

  • Stronger air and water safeguards near drilling sites
  • Stepped up enforcement by both the Ohio DNR and Ohio EPA
  • Greater agency transparency and drilling permit appeal rights for affected citizens
  • Consumer protections for property owners who lease their land for drilling

OEC staff attorney and legal affairs director Trent Dougherty will lead the webinar, detailing the SAFER GAS Act proposal.
