Today the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee announced a live Asian carp was discovered just nine miles from Lake Michigan. The following statement can be attributed in whole, or in part, to Kristy Meyer, managing director of natural resources at the Ohio Environmental Council:
“We no longer have time to waste waiting for President Trump’s administration to release the draft Brandon Road Lock and Dam report. The administration must instruct the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to release the report without delay so that we may quickly move towards modifications at the lock and dam to help keep Asian carp at bay while we develop a more permanent solution.
“States like Ohio are working hard to close the back doors of the Great Lakes to this invasive species. The Trump Administration must diligently work to close the front door to the Great Lakes. As Lake Erie sits squarely in the cross hairs of Asian carp, the fish could not only decimate our more than $1 billion sport-fishing industry, but exacerbate the toxic algae problem.
“Any further delay by the Trump Administration in releasing this report is unacceptable.”
