At the OEC, the health of our environment and communities is at the forefront of all we do, and we can’t have strong environmental protections if elected officials don’t listen to their voters. That’s why we are fighting to protect and strengthen Ohio’s democracy by ensuring fair elections.
This Tuesday, we have a real opportunity to make our democracy better for all Ohioans by voting YES ON ISSUE 1. This important ballot measure will end the unfair rigging of our congressional districts, and prevent future gerrymandering that favors one political party over another.
The OEC believes that a healthy democracy empowers voters to demand a healthy environment. After we pass this measure, our congressional districts will be drawn more fairly, which will encourage more competitive elections.
These fairly drawn congressional districts will force our elected leaders to truly listen to the majority of Ohioans who want clean energy, safe drinking water, and protected public lands.
It doesn’t matter if you typically vote in the Democratic or Republican primary. Issue 1 will appear on both ballots, and it’s endorsed by both parties. This will be one of the few things you can vote on this year that is truly bipartisan, yet at the same time makes a huge change to better our state and our country.
Gerrymandering has long existed in Ohio history, with both parties utilizing the process to their advantage. However, it is past time for this practice to end. This is why both the Ohio Republican Party and the Ohio Democratic Party have endorsed voting YES ON ISSUE 1, along with numerous labor organizations, business groups, and other advocacy organizations, including the OEC.
On Tuesday, the polls will open at 6:30 AM and close at 7:30 PM. Make sure you schedule time to make it to the polls in order to vote YES ON ISSUE 1!
We are on the precipice of a major breakthrough in ensuring fair elections for all Ohioans. Let’s get the job done on Tuesday.
