Groups Pledge to Help Officials Curb Pollution for Clean Lake Erie and Safe Water

Ohio Environmental Council, September 5, 2017

At the 2015 Leadership Summit of the Conference of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers, Governors Kasich, Snyder and Premier Wynn committed to reduce phosphorus entering Lake Erie’s western basin by 40 percent and toward that end outline an implementation plan to be developed in collaboration with stakeholder involvement.

The OEC and several other organizations thanked Governor Kasich for making this commitment that represents great potential to prevent harmful algal blooms from continuing to threaten drinking water for many shoreline communities and Lake Erie’s $12.9 billion dollar tourism and recreation industry.

In order to effectively achieve the goals specified in the June agreement, including developing an implementation plan, numerous organizations have signed letters to the governors of Ohio, Michigan and Indiana as well as the Premier of Ontario with specific recommendations offered in the spirit of securing a clean and healthy Lake Erie.
