CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Ohioans defeated Issue 1 on August 8, 2023!

Ohio Environmental Council, June 2, 2023

WE DID IT!

We did it! Together, we voted down Issue 1 by an overwhelming margin in Ohio’s August Special Election.

No matter where we live or what we look like, all Ohioans deserve to have their voices heard on the issues that matter most to them.

Issue 1 was designed to make citizen-initiated amendments harder to place on the ballot and harder to pass, by ending majority rule. Make no mistake, extreme politicians and corrupt special interests wanted to sneak Issue 1 past voters and rewrite the rules, so they can get what they want instead of what the people want.

But Ohioans overwhelmingly stopped them, decisively voting down this bad constitutional amendment. Together, we raised our collective voice to protect Ohioans’ right to direct democracy.

Thanks to support from members like you, the Ohio Environmental Council was able to educate and activate thousands of voters to turn out in this Special Election.

The OEC reached tens of thousands of members and followers through print and digital communications, including a stellar conversation with Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo. Digital ads made more than half a million impressions. Staff spoke with hundreds of Ohioans at Vote No on Issue 1 events across the state.

Ohio’s environmental movement showed up at the polls because we know in order to secure healthy air, vibrant public lands, and clean water, we need a strong democracy.

We appreciate your continued partnership in this important work. Thank you!
