Position Available: Crew Leader

Work Location: The MBI office is in Hilliard, Ohio on the west side of Columbus. Project work includes river and stream surveys in multiple states throughout the US.

Project Description: Biological assessment of fish assemblages using electrofishing methods; macroinvertebrate, algal, and qualitative and quantitative habitat assessments; water sample collections. Extended overnight travel (up to 30 consecutive days) is required, with all work-related travel costs, including lodging and meals, covered by MBI.

Position Description: Leads and oversees a 3-4 person field crew that collects fish, algal, habitat, and/or macroinvertebrate assemblage data in wadeable streams and non-wadeable rivers. Responsible for identifying fish to species in each survey area and locale, and executing required methods and quality assurance practices. Operates electrofishing equipment in wadeable streams and non-wadeable rivers, operates 4WD trucks, boats, and outboard motors. Responsible for carrying out a detailed plan of study, supervising all crew members, and for care and maintenance of all sampling gear and vehicles. Responsible for collection and custody of data including data sheets and ancillary forms and information. Crews often travel over extended periods including consecutive weekends. Position is seasonal, and employment with MBI is “at will”.

Baseline Skills Required: Must be able to supervise a field crew and identify fish to species level. Must have knowledge and/or experience about rivers and streams, boating, canoeing, navigation, and water safety in general. Must have knowledge and/or experience with water sampling techniques. Must be able to maintain a variable work schedule including irregular hours and extended overnight travel including consecutive weekends. Must be able to accurately maintain and retain records and expense documents, and to execute required methods and quality assurance practices per project specifications. Must be able to safely operate electrofishing equipment, 4WD trucks, boats, and outboard motors, and to complete specific work tasks, including the supervision of assistant crew leaders and field technicians.

Salary: $14.50 – $16.00/hr. commensurate with experience.

Period of Employment: All or parts of May through early December, 2018.

Other Requirements: Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and proof of insurance.
