Land Grant to Land-Grant: Lessons in Sustainability from a Brewery in our Backyard

January 9, 2018 @ 7:15 am - 9:30 am

On average, two craft breweries are opened daily in the United States (Brewers Association, 2017). Craft breweries, often relatively small, provide a diverse internal economy that allow for the application of a wide variety of sustainable business practices, including measures to improve energy efficiency, water stewardship, byproduct diversion, supply chain management, and waste diversion. Land-Grant Brewing Company – a small urban craft brewery located in Franklinton and founded and staffed by Ohio State alumni – is aiming to become the most sustainable brewery in Central Ohio.

Land-Grant’s Sustainability Manager, Vincent Valentino will be sharing successes, challenges, and failures that the brewery has faced in its first year of pursuing sustainability, talk about their partnership with urban farmers, Columbus community groups, and where they want to go next. Prof. Chris Tonra, whose family has participated in The Garden of Hope at Ohio State’s Waterman Farm that Land-Grant has supported, will provide introductory program remarks.

Speakers

Vincent Valentino – Land-Grant’s Sustainability Manager. Vincent is an Ohio State School of Environment and Natural Resources Alumnus and graduated in Ohio State’s second class of Environment, Economy, Development and Sustainability (EEDS) majors, with an EEDS specialization in Business and Sustainability.
