Alegae Blooms Return: Great Beer Needs Clean Water

David Miller, August 1, 2018

Local brewery brews algae-inspired green beer to discuss water quality

Toledo, Ohio – Maumee Bay Brewing Company and the Ohio Environmental Council share the goal of solving Lake Erie’s algae crisis. Together, they are launching a campaign to raise public awareness around toxic algae and water quality on the four year anniversary of the devastating Toledo Water Crisis that left 400,000 people without water in 2014.

In an event at Maumee Bay Brewing Co., The Ohio Environmental Council and Maumee Bay Brewing Co. will talk about the importance of clean, safe water in the process of beer-making, and the climate impacts on our water, while launching a beer highlighting the crisis.

With water as the largest ingredient in beer, access to clean, healthy water is essential to putting out a quality product, sustaining jobs, and creating growth opportunities in northwest Ohio.

Maumee Bay Brewing Co. will release a green beer called “Ale’gae Blooms” to raise awareness of how annual algal blooms threaten their product and our region’s public health. This beer will be available at the event.

Later this summer, the beer will be canned and distributed throughout Ohio, with a portion of the profits to be donated to the Ohio Environmental Council for continued advocacy around water quality and fighting pollution that leads to the toxic algae in Lake Erie.

Maumee Bay Brewing Co. brewers will provide a tour of the brewery to demonstrate how Toledo water is used in the brewing process.
