In 2009, the U.S. EPA issued a foundational scientific, regulatory determination: greenhouse gas emissions endanger public health and welfare, and emissions from vehicles contribute to that pollution. All Ohioans and Americans deserve a healthy environment. The U.S. EPA’s decision to regulate greenhouse gas emissions has contributed to significant benefits to human health and the environment across the country.
But this month, the U.S. EPA under the Trump Administration is proposing to eliminate sixteen years of scientifically backed regulation by rescinding the Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding.
Together, Ohioans must join with thousands of others across the country who are calling on the U.S. EPA to maintain the Endangerment Finding because it benefits all of us.

If you’re looking for additional talking points, we recommend the following:
- The Endangerment Finding was a scientific assessment and determination, not a legal conclusion.
- The science is stronger now than in 2009, that GHG pollution endangers public health and welfare, and that vehicular GHG emissions contribute to that pollution.
- The Endangerment Finding has been ratified by Congress through the Inflation Reduction Act amendments to the Clean Air Act.
- Ohio municipalities will need to increase spending by at least $1.8 billion to $5.9 billion per year by midcentury to adapt to the challenges of a worsening climate crisis.
We know these federal regulatory changes seem preordained. Still, by submitting comments on the record, we can help build both the historical record showing how many people opposed this change and help build a valuable record in any efforts to litigate the rescission of the Endangerment Finding.
