Four Part Water Policy & Storytelling Training Series
In partnership with the Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve, Chagrin River Watershed Partners hosted a four-part training series led by Emily Arthur of the Ohio Environmental Council. The series strengthens participants’ understanding of water policy, funding, communication, and policymaker engagement. These recorded sessions build from foundational knowledge to practical action and are designed to be relevant to organizations with different roles, capacities, and advocacy limitations.
Together, these sessions provide the knowledge, confidence, and tools needed to effectively engage in water policy and advocacy across Ohio.
Session 1: Money, Money, Money – Navigating Federal & State Funding
Explore key local, state, and federal restoration funding sources, how these programs work, state and federal budget timelines, and when organizations can appropriately educate and engage decision-makers.
Session 2: Policy 101 – Navigating Language, the Lay of the Land, and Acceptable Roles

Learn the fundamentals of advocacy, what different types of organizations can and cannot do, and how to engage appropriately in state and federal policy processes.
Sessions 3: Effective Communication
Sessions 4: Taking Action
Develop communication skills to craft compelling stories, translate technical information, and connect with policymakers. Then explore strategies for building relationships with decision-makers, preparing for meetings, and identifying opportunities for meaningful engagement and education.
