Methane Mitigation
How Methane Pollution Affects Ohio
The OEC is proud to be at the forefront of the fight to cut dangerous methane pollution in Ohio. As part of the Methane Partners Campaign (MPC), OEC educates Ohioans, advocates for strong federal and state methane protections, and ensures the voices of impacted communities are valued. Our work focuses on advancing state-level action, such as a strong State Implementation Plan (SIP) under EPA’s methane rules and Ohio’s Orphan Well Program to stop methane leaks from abandoned wells.
Methane mitigation also makes clear economic sense. Oil and gas operators waste millions of dollars in lost gas each year through leaking, venting, and flaring methane. Capturing that gas through proven technologies is cost-effective and creates high-quality jobs in leak detection, monitoring, and repair. Reducing methane pollution drives industry innovation and positions Ohio workers and businesses to lead the future economy.
Today, our work is more urgent than ever. The Trump Administration’s EPA is rolling back vital methane rules and threatening the EPA’s Endangerment Finding, which recognizes that climate pollution like methane endangers public health. These attacks are an assault on science, public health, and our climate future. OEC stands firmly with MPC and allies across the country in opposing these dangerous rollbacks and defending strong climate protections. Together, we are fighting for a healthier, safer, and more just future for all Ohioans.
