State Policy Advocacy
How the OEC’s strategies are shaping legislation at the statehouse for the better
Our OEC policy teams have been at the forefront of environmental policy advocacy, working to protect Ohio’s air, land, water, and democracy. Through strategic engagement with policymakers, coalition building, and grassroots mobilization, the OEC is driving meaningful progress on critical environmental issues.
One of the OEC’s key efforts has been advocating for clean energy policies that create a reliable, efficient, and affordable energy system. Our Energy Team experts’ main focus has been two comprehensive pieces of energy legislation: House Bill 15 and Senate Bill 2, which, among many other measures, repeal the costly coal subsidies created under the controversial House Bill 6 that have drained nearly $600 million from customers’ pockets. The legislation is not perfect, but the OEC Energy Team is working to ensure the bill includes utility accountability, grid reliability, and reform at the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.
Water quality remains a top priority for the OEC. We have actively engaged in efforts to improve water protection, advocating for science-based solutions to combat harmful algal blooms and ensure safe drinking water. Our Water Team experts are instrumental in pushing for increased state and federal funding for water infrastructure and pollution reduction measures, particularly in the Lake Erie watershed and other vulnerable areas. Currently, our experts are actively advocating for renewed funding for water protections within the State budget.
In addition, we have been strong defenders of Ohio’s natural lands. From working to protect public parks and forests from industrial threats to championing policies that support habitat restoration and biodiversity, we are committed to safeguarding Ohio’s invaluable natural resources.
Finally, the OEC has continued its fight for fair and accessible democracy, recognizing that environmental progress is only possible when all voices are heard. We have advocated for fair representation, voter access, and government transparency, ensuring that Ohioans can hold their leaders accountable on environmental issues.
Through advocacy, education, and coalition-building, the OEC remains steadfast in our mission to secure a healthier, more sustainable Ohio for all.*
