OEC Releases New Report on Large-Scale Development Trends and Environmental Implications in Central Ohio
Columbus, OH—The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) is proud to announce the release of a new report, Large-Scale Development Trends in Central Ohio and Their Environmental Implications. Authored by expert researcher Jon-Paul d’Aversa, this report provides critical insights into the environmental impacts of large-scale development across the Central Ohio region.
Recognizing a significant gap in available information, the OEC commissioned this report to better understand how rapid growth and development are shaping Central Ohio’s environmental landscape. After months of research, we are pleased to share this resource with the community.
Central Ohio is experiencing unprecedented economic growth, attracting major corporations and fostering new opportunities—but this rapid development comes with significant environmental and social challenges. According to the new report, the region’s expansion is driving increased energy consumption, higher greenhouse gas emissions, and growing pressure on local water resources. Without strategic planning, unchecked development could also lead to habitat loss and the displacement of long-term residents due to rising property values. The OEC’s report highlights the urgent need for sustainable infrastructure investments, inclusive community planning, and stronger regional collaboration to ensure that Central Ohio’s growth is both environmentally responsible and socially equitable.
The following quote can be attributed, in whole or in part, to Carol Kauffman, Chief Executive Officer of the Ohio Environmental Council:
“This report is an important step toward ensuring that Central Ohio’s development is both sustainable and equitable. As the region rapidly grows, we must consider the long-term environmental consequences and work together to protect our air, water, and natural spaces.
“We are excited to deepen our engagement in Central Ohio and strengthen our regional advocacy efforts. With our headquarters located in Ohio’s largest city and one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S., the OEC is dedicated to supporting sustainable growth and innovative development.”
